Chapter Seven

The walls of the room the police used for questioning seemed to close in on Sharon as she waited for them to appear, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Her knees jittered beneath the wooden table. The harsh fluorescent lights above hummed relentlessly. A bead of sweat slipped down the back of her neck.

The door opened, and Sharon jolted in surprise.

Detective Reed stepped into the room and pulled out the seat across from her.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you.” He sat down and smiled at her.

“It’s all right.” Sharon mustered a small, wan smile.

Detective Reed flipped through a notepad, his pen clicking with each turn of the page. As she waited for him to speak, Sharon’s stomach twisted in knots.

Finally, Detective Reed acknowledged her. “You know why you’re here, right?”

Sharon swallowed hard. “I assume you want to ask me about Charles?”

“Did you see anything suspicious before the cupcakes were given out to everyone at the Radford’s table?” he asked.

Sharon fiddled with the hem of her dress. “Not really. I was distracted by what happened after Caroline and I got the cupcakes.”

“You mean when she bumped into a server?” Detective Reed clarified.

Sharon nodded. “That’s right.”

“What about before the event?”

“Pardon?” Sharon looked at him, puzzled.

“Did you notice anything odd before today?”

“No, not really.” Sharon looked away, avoiding his stare.

“Are you sure?” He frowned.

Sharon gulped. She averted her eyes to the floor, her heart pounding in her chest.

Detective Reed placed his pen on the table. “I’ll cut to the chase, Ms. Caldera. A witness claims they overheard a conversation between you and Caroline Radford at the family summer home days before the event. According to their testimony, it was about Ryan, and Caroline’s... concerns regarding the family company.”

Sharon’s heart leaped into her throat.

He could only mean that conversation. Darn it. I never should have spoken to Caroline that night. If she killed Charles, I can't let them know or they'll suspect I had something to do with it. Sharon gritted her teeth.

“Who told you about that?” She gripped her dress, her hands shaking.

“I’m not at liberty to say.” Detective Reed’s lips pressed into a tight, calculating smile. “But you don’t deny having a conversation with Mrs. Radford?”

Sharon hesitated, her mind racing. She thought back to that night—Caroline’s calm, calculated words. Her promise to do whatever it took to secure Ryan’s place at the helm of the company.

But Sharon couldn’t afford to admit it now. Not after Charles’s death.

Relax, Sharon. No one saw you in the room that night except for Caroline. They don’t have proof. Sharon met his gaze.

“No. I didn’t speak to her. Whoever told you that was mistaken.”

Reed leaned back in his chair, his eyes never leaving hers. “Are you sure you haven’t forgotten? Does the phrase ‘by any means necessary’ ring a bell?”

Sharon’s throat tightened. “No, it doesn’t.”

Detective Reed studied her, silent for a long beat. Then he scribbled something down in his notebook. When he looked up, his expression softened just enough to be unsettling. “If we find that anything you’re saying is untrue, Ms.
